Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) Treatment and Management: Why Alexandra Jansen, ARNP is a Top HAE Provider
Written by Laura Jetter, ARNP | Monarch Medical
Understanding Hereditary Angioedema (HAE)
Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) is a rare genetic condition that causes recurrent episodes of severe swelling, also known as angioedema. It is caused by a genetic mutation that effects C1, a protein that is part of your complement immune system. Swelling can occur anywhere on the body, but commonly affects the face, abdomen, or arms and legs. In severe cases, some individuals can experience internal swelling of the gastrointestinal track or airway. Swelling is typically localized, or isolated to one area and will often last several days if untreated. Unlike an allergic reaction, swelling with HAE does not respond to steroids or antihistamines. Special medications that affect C1 and the complement system are needed to stop and control the swells. Common triggers for swelling include stress, certain medications (such as hormones, birth control etc.), surgery, trauma or infection. However, in some individuals, swells occur without a precipitating trigger.
HAE is considered a rare disease, affecting approximately 1 in 50,000 people. Because of its rarity and varied symptoms, patients often experience delayed diagnosis, misdiagnosis, or years of feeling unheard before receiving proper care.
