Eosinophils and Asthma: What They Are and Why They Matter In Asthma

What Are Eosinophils?
Luckily we all have eosinophils. Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell involved in the body’s immune response. These little cells play an important role in our immune defense against parasites, the inflammatory response and immune signaling. For the average person, these are all important things that help our immune system defend against unwanted infections and inflammation. However, the right number of eosinophils is a delicate balance. In some individuals, too many eosinophils start to be the cause of unwanted inflammation and an overactive immune response. This is the case for individuals with eosinophilic asthma. An abundance of eosinophils start to drive the asthma and the symptom such as wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and asthma attacks become more severe and frequent.
Diagnosing Eosinophilic Asthma
At our asthma clinic, we offer same-day asthma assessments, which may include:
Blood tests to measure eosinophil levels
Lung function testing (spirometry)
Medication review and symptom assessment
Blood eosinophil counts are a key biomarker used to guide asthma treatment and personalize care. If you have a diagnosis of asthma and are struggling….you should know if your eosinophils are high. At Monarch Medical, we can help you identify and deal with your eosinophils. Proper evaluation can prevent worsening asthma symptoms and complications.
Treatment Options for Eosinophilic Asthma
Treatment for eosinophilic asthma is different for each individual. That is why sitting down with a trusted provider at Monarch Medical is so important. We will work with you to create an asthma control plan that fits your goals and lifestyle. Some of the treatment options available include
Inhalers such as inhaled corticosteroids and bronchidilators.
Allergy medications to lessen your reactivity to allergen triggers
Biologic therapies such as Dupixent, Nucala, Tezspire, Fasenra, Exdensur are targeted therapies that directly impact the eosinophils and type II inflammation. These types of medications dramatically reduce asthma symptoms and improve lung function in individuals with eosinophilc asthma.
